Sir Edward Leigh, the Conservative Member of Parliament for the Gainsborough Constituency, will support Andrea Leadsom’s campaign to become the leader of the Conservative Party, and Prime Minister. Sir Edward acknowledges:
“We are very fortunate in the Conservative Party that we have had a plethora of very capable candidates to be able to choose from. Dr. Liam Fox fought a good campaign which I was pleased to support him.
“I admire both Theresa May and Michael Gove greatly, however, with Liam Fox no longer in race and Stephen Crabb withdrawing yesterday, as we approach the final round of voting, I have decided to support Andrea Leadsom.
“Andrea has campaigned for Britain to leave the European Union and I believe that the county will need a new leader who supported the Leave campaign. Andrea is best placed to secure a place in the ballot of Party members, and I will actively support her campaign. I know that she is best placed to win.”
Sir Edward’s declaration comes after the first round of voting on Tuesday where Liam Fox was eliminated, and Stephen Crabb pulled out of the race after finishing forth. The final two MPs will be on a ballot paper for members of the party to vote on where the new leader and Prime Minister will be in place by early September.
