Children and their families and friends from across the district were invited to get the summer holiday off to a good start with a free family fun day.West Lindsey District Council and Lincolnshire County Council worked together to put on the action packed free event at the Trinity Arts Centre in Gainsborough.
Giant board games such as chess and connect four and giant twister were available for people to play. Youngsters were also invited to have a go in the arts and craft area or try and hook a duck to win a prize.
Cllr Pat Mewis (Scotter & Blyton), Chairman of West Lindsey District Council, was thrilled to be able to attend the event, taking part in the photo booth and speaking to families on the day. She said:
“I have really been looking forward to the family fun day. The event has been brilliant, it is so lovely to see young people and families coming together to have a good and fun day out! Events such as this really bring the community together. I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has supported this day. ”
Cllr Mewis was joined by the Vice-Chairman of the Council, Cllr. Steve England (Dunholme & Welton) and Chairman of the Prosperous Community Committee, Cllr Sheila Bibb (Gainsborough North).
The emergency services attended the event, bringing along a couple of vehicles for families to see up close.
Five-year-old Sophia Plaziuk, from Gainsborough, loved being able to spend the day at the Trinity Arts Centre having fun with her mum. She said:
“I have really enjoying myself. I’ve made lots of crafty things and won lots of prizes and I even got to give an owl called Eric a stroke!”
Her mum Sarah Simmonds enjoyed being able to attend the event with her daughter. She said:
“My daughter and I have really enjoyed our day out at Trinity Arts Centre. We saw it advertised on Facebook and we are so glad we came along! We would love to see more events like this in the future, it’s great to have free things for the kids.”
Families were able to find out all about the work the exciting developments planned for Gainsborough including a cinema and restaurants.
Members of the council’s growth team were on hand to talk about the planned proposals, and the exciting ways they are trying to preserve the heritage of the town. The council received a development phase grant from the Heritage Lottery of £54,000.This will be match-funded by Conservative-led West Lindsey District Council, creating an overall fund of £71,300.
The project will focus on the restoration of historic buildings and heritage assets in our town centre, specifically focusing on Lord Street and the Market Place. This grant will potentially pave the way for future funding in excess of £1.8 million. The event, featured a host of competitions and prizes to be won, as well as tasty refreshments.

Debbie Barker, Senior Youth and Community Development Worker for Lincoln and West Lindsey Youth HUB (Lincolnshire County Council Children’s Services) was delighted to help plan the event. She said:
“I feel proud to help organise the event, LCC and WLDC have worked together to plan a fun family day and help bring the community together.”
