Local Conservatives have expressed their disappointment at news that Oldrids in Gainsborough is planned to be closed by the Boston-based company.
Sir Edward Leigh, the Conservative Member of Parliament for the town, commented:
“I am disappointed to learn the Oldrids in Gainsborough has given notice to Lincolnshire Co-operative, who own the site, that they will be pulling out of the town early in 2018.
“Between now and then I know they are going to make every effort to make the business more viable and local people can make a difference by choosing to buy locally. We must all play our part if we want local businesses, services and amenities to remain available to us in our area.
“I know this will be a frustratingly uncertain time for the people who work in the store. The county-based company has said it will 'investigate all options' to keep the shop open and secure the jobs for their existing employees. I hope they succeed in that.”
Conservative Leader of West Lindsey District Council, Cllr. Jeff Summers, said:
“The council is disappointed to hear about the potential closure of Oldrids in Gainsborough. Oldrids makes a huge contribution to the vibrancy of the town centre and has traded above expectations. The building is an excellent town centre site and we are confident that a new tenant will be found.
“The council is working hard to ensure that Gainsborough is a vibrant and attractive town to live, work and visit. We are launching a joint venture company with the owners of Marshall’s Yard to buy, refurbish and re-let vacant shops in the town, and have secured a 25 year lease with Travelodge to create a new hotel. In addition Boyes has nearly completed their new store and an additional unit, likely to be for food, adjacent to Oldrids.
“The new Lidl store will open in November and will provide 120 car parking spaces to service this part of the town centre.”
