More than 400 budding athletes will be striving for gold as they take part in a special Olympic games event.
The Gainsborough Children’s Centre has teamed up with the Gainsborough Toy Library and Conservative controlled West Lindsey District Council to host the Under 5 Children’s Centre Games.
Kathy Denman, support assistant at the children’s centre and Rachel Connelly from the Gainsborough Toy Library said:
“We wanted to do something to mark the Olympics.
“We thought it would be great to hold a sporting event to bring all the children’s centres and nurseries in the town together.
“We have been amazed and delighted with the response from all the groups invited to the event and we are looking forward to seeing so many young people taking part.”
The event will take place on Wednesday, June 20 between 10am and 2pm.
It will be held at the Levelling Playing Fields but it is an invite only event, due to the volume of people taking part and so many young people taking part.
Conservative, Cllr. Gillian Bardsley, who represents the Gainsborough North Ward, said:
“Kathy and the team are really pulling out all the stops to celebrate the occasion. They are planning to hold healthy toddle Torch relay walks, the week before the event. Then on the morning of the main event, the torch will leave the Gainsborough Children’s Centre and go to the Levellings for an opening ceremony of the games. We are just hoping for good weather on the day and hope the children have a wonderful time.”
The children will be able to try out some Olympic style events including javelins (made from foam). The games will be followed by a picnic lunch and a closing ceremony, complete with medals and certificates and a special balloon release race.
