Gainsborough MP Edward Leigh quizzed the Justice Secretary on the future of Lincoln Prison. The prison is under review, with the possibility of closure in its current form.

In the House of Commons, Mr. Leigh asked Justice Secretary, Chris Grayling:

“Why are the Government consulting on closing Lincoln Prison, which, as far as I know, has caused no trouble to the community since Eamon de Valera escaped from it during the first world war, and which provided 400 jobs, and humanely and safely locks our local villains away?”

In his response, the minister said that, 'no decision has [yet] been taken', and assured the local MP that he will 'personally be looking very carefully at the issue'.

Speaking afterwards, Edward Leigh said:

“Lincoln prison is of course a valued local employer, but it is also very important that Lincoln retains its prison in order to allow the local justice system to function smoothly. What’s more, the prison acts as a big, and very solid, symbol that this government is committed to ensuring that criminals whose crimes deserve a custodial sentence end up in prison.

“Lincolnshire MPs, including of course Karl McCartney, are united in their desire to save Lincoln Prison. I hope that we will hear from the minister to let us know that the prison will be saved as soon as possible.”
