Conservatives in the Gainsborough Constituency have been celebrating the successful locally following the re-election of Sir Edward Leigh, as the Member of Parliament, who saw his ninth general election victory and an increased majority, on a night of mixed fortunes for the Party.
Following a brisk count, even with turnout of 67.96% slightly higher than in 2015 when turnout was 66.21%, Sir Edward was declared victorious shortly after 3:00am on Friday, 9th June 2017, with an increased majority of 17,023 (up 1,574). The result was:
- Sir Edward Leigh (Conservative) - 31,790 (61.8%) up 9.1%
- Catherine Tite (Labour) - 14,767 (28.7%) up 7.4%
- Lesley Rollings (Liberal Democrat) - 3,630 (7.0%) up 0.4%
- Victoria Pearson (Green) - 1,621 (2.3%) down 0.2%
Giles McNeill, Sir Edward's Agent said:
"This a very good result! Sir Edward has always campaigned hard, touring the whole constituency during the campaign and he works hard as a constituency MP, making sure that he deals with people's requests. His poll of 31,790 is the highest poll for any candidate ever, beating his previous best in 1992 of 31,444. The 61.8% share is the first time that the Conservatives we have breached the hitherto sixty per cent ceiling within the constituency.
"Labour had an improved showing locally, reflecting the national picture, although the Conservatives increased majority over them suggests that their progress was limited.
"The Liberal Democrats remain in the doldrums following their terrible result locally in 2015 having picked up just an extra 340 votes and the Greens lost ground losing a handful of votes and dropping back in percentage terms."
